My Camera Bag Must-Haves For Travel Photographers
With so many camera options out on the market today, it can be a challenge to find the right photography travel gear. I figured it was time for me to add a list of my kit as a permanent resource here on the site in the hopes that it will give you some ideas for your own camera bag. I am a completely self-taught photographer and use cameras and lenses that are affordable, but will still allow you to learn about the craft and take incredible photos.
Nikon D3300
For months I was wondering about which camera I should upgrade to when choosing my first DSLR. After reading countless reviews, assessing the pros and cons of various models, and debating about Canon vs. Nikon, I settled on the Nikon D3300, a lightweight, user friendly, entry-level camera with a powerful sensor and high quality images.
The D3300 comes with features that really blow the rest of the competition out of the water. This camera is equipped with a 24.2MP image sensor, a 700 shot battery life, the ability to shoot HD video, and a higher range ISO capability than its predecessor, the D3200.
NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
This lens was supplied with the D3300, and it’s actually pretty good for capturing landscapes and portraits. It stays on my camera the majority of the time.
NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6
I purchased this 200mm lens in addition to the 18-55mm kits lens for wildlife photography, landscapes, and macro photography.
For an affordable price, this compact zoom lens comes with built-in vibration reduction so that you can be sure to get the shot no matter the focal length.
Nikon S1
I traveled with this compact Nikon camera for several years before upgrading to the D3300.
Lightweight and smaller than a DSLR, the S1 is easy to handle. It’s a great choice to carry around in places where you don’t want to draw too much attention to yourself, but you can still rely on outstanding photo quality.
Nikon 1 NIKKOR 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6
This was the first zoom lens I ever bought and it has captured some great moments. Perfect as a starter kit lens with the S1 camera, this lens is also interchangeable with other Nikon 1 series cameras.
GoPro HERO + LCD
When I finally decided to buy an action travel camera, I went for the Hero + LCD, mainly because it fit my mid-range price point and includes a touchscreen on the back so that you can review what you’re shooting.
This tiny camera takes sharp HD video, and the widescreen angle ensures that you don’t miss anything in your shot.
Olympus TG-4
The TG-4 can go 50 feet underwater, be dropped from 7 feet, get crushed by 220 lbs, and operated at temperatures as low as 14F.
Apart from taking some great underwater shots, it's also practical to carry around above water if you don't want to lug around a DSLR.
Think Tank Retrospective 5
I did a ton of research before choosing this Think Tank camera bag, as it is an investment piece. I knew that I didn't want a large bag that would weigh me down if I was on the go all day. Not too big, but it's still roomy enough to hold my DSLR, an extra zoom lens, spare battery, and GoPro. All of the dividers inside the bag are removable so the interior can be customized to any set of gear.
With a modern yet subtle design, this bag is perfect for travelers who don't want to draw attention to their photo gear.
