The Oaxacan Coastline at Sunset
I have been extremely lucky to see some completely breathtaking sunsets throughout my travels. Some of my absolute favorites include watching our big fiery star meet the icy horizon amidst towering icebergs off the coast of southern Greenland and seeing the last bright yellow rays of sun fall over the lush rolling hills of Costa Rica.
However, I think it's safe to say that one place beats out all the rest: Oaxaca, a Mexican state on the Pacific coast best known for its culinary diversity and infamous Dia de los Muertos celebrations.
It was here that I found a little piece of traveler heaven, along with the most unforgettable sunsets, night after night.
At dusk, the warm ocean winds sweep across Playa Zipolite, blowing up the fine sand to create a haze along the beach.
Friends gather at Punta Cometa, a view point jutting out into the Pacific Ocean near Mazunte. Getting to Punta Cometa can be a little tricky and it's easy to miss. In Mazunte, take the turn off from Calle Rinconcito towards Playa Mermejita. Turn left up the road past the Cabanas Balamjuyuc until you reach the entrance of the park around Punta Cometa. Take the path to the right labeled as Sendero Corral de Piedra Poniente and you should reach Punta Cometa in about 15-20 minutes.
The short trek to Punta Cometa is completely worth it as you'll be rewarded with views like this one!
To see the sky painted in vibrant oranges, light purples, and cool blues, pack your beach blanket, a cold cerveza, and find a spot on the beach to catch the last of the sun's rays.
The waters around the coast of Oaxaca are refreshingly cool during the intense midday heat, yet still warm enough for a swim at dusk...
... or for surfing at sunset.
Travel to Oaxaca in the off-season and reap the benefit of having huge beaches almost to yourself. In Puerto Escondido and Zipolite (a full travel guide to Zipolite can be found here) you'll find the beaches lined with plenty of cheap bars and delicious restaurants where you can refresh with a margarita while watching amateur and pro surfers ride the waves.
